BENJAMIN GEARY FENWICK
you've got to swim, swim in the dark
there's no shame in drifting
feel the tide shifting and wait for the spark
yeah, you've gotta swim, don't let yourself sink
just find the horizon
i promise you it's not as far away as you think
the currents will drag us away from our love
just keep your head above and
swim
you've got to swim, swim in the dark
there's no shame in drifting
feel the tide shifting and wait for the spark
yeah, you've gotta swim, don't let yourself sink
just find the horizon
i promise you it's not as far away as you think
the currents will drag us away from our love
just keep your head above and
swim

Description: Benjy could pass for his father's younger brother. The spitting image of his old man, Benjy is proud to be so alike his father. Tall, broad shouldered, and with boyish good looks, he fared extremely well in the genetic lottery. He looks like the sort of bloke a girl would want to bring home to her mum.
Benjy favors leather jackets, simple shirts, straight leg jeans, and his favorite pair of dragonskin boots that cost him a whole paycheque. He very rarely wears robes, finding them cumbersome and uncomfortable. Benjy would't look out of place at a muggle rock concert. He is never without his coming of age watch, gifted to him by his elder brother.

Habits/Quirks:
- Oral fixation: He recently quit smoking. He usually has a toothpick in his mouth and fiddles with it constantly.
- Bibliophile: Whenever Benjy is traveling, he is always devouring another book. His predilection for muggle transport gives him plenty of time to read.
- Muggle chores: Benjy has never gotten into the habit of using his wand for mundane chores. It doesn't help that he's useless at housework charms.
Strengths:
- Curse breaking : Benjy's strong background in Study of Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Charms, and History of Magic make him a phenomenal treasure hunter.
- Silver tongue: Benjy is charming. This skill has gotten him out of trouble more than a few times.
- Adventure: With Benjy, it's a skill.
Weaknesses:
- Wanderlust: Benjy hates staying in one place for too long. He yearns to travel.
- Impatient/Impulsive: He tends to push. This often ends badly.
- Perfectionist: Benjy is high functioning and demands excellence from himself and others. He feels like an impostor sometimes, and is terrified he will be exposed as an intellectual fraud.
- Smoking: He's doing an awful job of quitting. He's managed three weeks clean so far.
- Sentimental: Benjy has a mild hoarding problem. He can't throw gifts or cards or letters away. His flat is filled with boxes filled with this 'junk' in addition to all the little treasures he nicks from work.
Overall Personality:
Benjy is a younger brother. Growing up in the shadow of his brother, Blaine, Benjy began devising ways to outshine his brother early on. Their rivalry helped spark Benjy's competitive streak, and he attributes his success at Hogwarts and at Gringotts to this fire. Highly intelligent, inventive, and gutsy, his reckless pursuit of knowledge and adventure has forced him into a competent wizard. His need for excellence is enflamed further by his passion for learning; Benjy can get completely wrapped up in an interesting topic and lose several days of his life trying to master a new spell or a new archaic language.
When Benjy isn't pushing himself to exhaustion, he's cheering on the Montrose Magpies and arguing with anyone who will listen about their odds for the Cup. Benjamin indulges quite frequently in literature and has probably bought enough texts from Obscurus Books to open a library. Benjy finds calm in reading and daily chores, which seem to be the only respite from what would otherwise be a constant manic episode.
However, Benjy cherishes few things more than friendship. He is a tirelessly loyal supporter, willing to completely pause his life in order to assist his friends. Benjy refuses to leave a mate behind and considers it the height of dishonor to give up on a loved one. His loyalty is hard-won, but eternal.

Overall History:
Born in the coastal town of Montrose, Benjamin was the second son to a delighted Mr. and Mrs. Fenwick. Benjamin was dropped very quickly for "Benjy" and he has never managed to shake the nickname. Five years younger than his brother, he watched with great envy as his brother displayed magcial talent. The Fenwicks were quite astonished to receive a visit from a witch in severe looking green who explained gently that Blaine was a wizard and, yes, magic is real.
It was that moment that forever cemented Benjy's and Blaine's friendly rivalry. Benjy demanded to know if he too was a wizard, but the witch (one Professor McGonagall) advised him to wait and see. He hadn't liked the answer and set to immediately attempting magic. He even nicked his elder brother's wand once and set fire to the kitchen. It was progress, however, and Benjy was only motivated further to be just as good, no, BETTER than Blaine in the way only a younger brother can.
The day finally came where Benjy received his Owl. The day he bought his wand, Dogwood and Unicorn Hair Seven And Five Eighths Inches (springy!), was among the happiest in his life. Benjy's parents were as supportive as they could be, all things considered, but quite saddened to have to send Benjy off to school.
Benjy's time at Hogwarts was thrilling, fascinating, and riddled with explosions. Sorted into Ravenclaw (very nearly Gryffindor) Benjy had a tendancy to work ahead in his coursework with rather explosive results. He made a small group of friends, mostly halfbloods and muggleborns, and it was during this time he met Skyler. Despite being a Slytherin, they became close friends. Benjy was a bit amused at having something of a little sister in her, and after years of being the younger brother (to the ridiculously cool, charming, and talented Gryffindor that was Blaine) he was a bit tickled to be the elder for once. They shared a passion for learning and pushing the boundaries of magic and their muggle backgrounds gave them a sense of comraderie.
He received top marks in his OWLs and even better NEWTs grades, beating his brother handsomely in the grades department, if not the land of Quidditch. His brother, a Public Relations official for the Montrose Magpies, kept a regular correspondance with his younger brother, keeping their rivalry alive and strong.
Benjy graduated and before embarking on a summer holiday to South America, decided to check in on his mate who had, frustratingly, refused to owl him back for the past five months. Benjy's South American adventure was immediately cancelled when he found the state she was in. He spent the next month helping her put her life back together, plagued with guilt for not having come sooner, but deterined to make up for it. He did his very best to help her get well and remember to eat more than twice a week. He happily helped convince Professors to let her continue on track for graduation and even made her tea (though he was sure it tasted like ditchwater).
He had to leave far too soon, as he could no longer delay his job with Gringotts, and rather reluctantly he began work immediately in London. He maintains weekly contact with Skyler with letters and the occasional Floo chat.
Benjy was recently recruited into the Order of the Phoenix by his elder brother. His position as a Gringotts Curse Breaker allows him to keep an eye on the gold of suspected Death Eaters and subtly encourage goblins to ally with the Order. Benjy does somewhat resent his position, as it keeps him trapped in London. More than anything, Benjy wants to take a long holiday in South America and... "liberate" some ancient treasure.

[written as older!Benjy]
It's raining in London. It always is. Benjy can never seem to get away from this fucking rain. It's day three without the sun, like every other November he can remember, and he's walking to work in the city he swore he'd escape three years ago. He has walked this path every weekday for those terrible years, has passed the same beggar with the same sign and has yet to have ever left London. Every morning, Benjy hates his fucking life, hates the sixteen and a half minute walk to Diagon Alley and the additional ten minutes to reach his bloody desk at Gringotts. Every morning, Benjy wonders where he went wrong in life, and it inevitably comes back to the fucking Order.
Every morning, Benjy dreams about leaving the bunch of goddamn heroes and floo'ing out to Peru and never coming back. Every morning, Benjy hates himself for falling victim to that fucking hero complex and throwing away his dreams for a war he doesn't even think they'll win. He wants to go somewhere tropical and ancient, put his training to use and find treasures from an age long gone. He wants to go to the temples and fight mummies and curses and live like he's actually alive.
Benjy always talks himself out of his mad flights of fancy by the time he reaches the office. As he drops his leather jacket over his chair, his anger has diffused and he's decided against telling his boss to piss off. Every day as he grabs his coffee, he tells himself he'll transfer tomorrow, get on the first plane out of this wretched city and somewhere truly magical. Today is no different and Benjy stares sullenly into his coffee, looking for answers he knows he can't use.
The Order dictates that he stay in London. His eyes and ears are so useful in this marble hall, and even better down below. The Order likes having him next to their money, having him at the ears of sympathetic goblins. They like having him follow suspected Death Eaters, what should be Auror's work, but Benjy's known to hang around with Mundungus and less likely to get blown up, they say. He's not so sure he believes that, but what can he do? The Order dictates.
